Is Kenya Safe for Women Travelling on Safari?
My first solo trip to Kenya was at 50. It was to celebrate my birthday. I treated myself to business class seats and went gung-ho and all out. The trip was good. I have to say good as there were a few things that did go wrong. But I loved being a solo female traveller and will never regret it!!
What type of Safari is best for you?
Type of Safari | Why | My Personal Rating |
Hosted | You have a personal concierge | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
Private | It can be isolating for a couple | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
Joining Women’s Group | Solo does not have to mean alone | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
Luxury | Ethical and or sustainable | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
The Safari Jeep kept breaking down, wasting hours of time, and you are sitting in the heat in the car!

This is a safari van we dragged out of the mud as it was stranded We chased too many animals for my liking
I felt a bit concerned and unsure when being asked for money
I did not feel protected when many people swarmed the car
Some security guards with guns asked me to exchange money, which was odd
My back hurt from aggressive driving
We had five, yep, 5 flat tires

Why did I have these issues on my first solo female safari in Kenya?
Well, I think that I was a bit oblivious when it came to Safaris. I booked, with little research on what the ethics of the company were. I wish I had options. In, a shared group it is hard to say "no" to something if the ethical values of the other people in the jeep do not match yours.
So, is Kenya safe for women on Safari? Well, I was safe, sometimes uncomfortable but safe! I think if you stay in a group. Go out in the day. Nothing will happen. But, as in every country, even Frankfurt in Germany. You need to be vigilant. Don't do anything risky and choose the right guide and tour. This may seem obvious, but do not follow any hippos or try to connect with them! They are dangerous, not cute!
How I made my solo adventure safer
To make Kenya a safer place, I need more education. I also needed a layer of protection. When you join Safaris, you do not know who is the vehicle with you. I wanted to create a safari with "like-minded" women.
So, when you book, you know that the package will be for women with an interest in ethical safaris. Or understands philanthropy and culture and enjoys philanthropic travel. The Safari is immediately safer when you are with like-minded women
Female Led Travel on Safari
What I needed was a layer of protection. A person that could be firm and not bribed. To be with me on the visits. This is what I have added on my women-only safaris.
I am the Safari Host. I am not the guide, the driver or the photographer. I am the one that will ensure that you do not feel uncomfortable. My 2026 Safari itineraries are here.
FAQ
What if I don't want to tip?
It is usual to tip the guide. But you are not obliged. You do you and what you feel comfortable with. You can also buy the guides or drivers a coffee!
What if I don't feel safe?
First of all, if you are nervous - then think now about the trip you want to go on. Join a group safari for women. This is better than a solo trip as solo does not mean alone.
Does barrier-free mean that there will be wild animals everywhere?
Actually, you might see some baboons, monkeys etc. In some camps an elephant will come through. But these are all camps in the national parks themselves. For example, The Mara Bush Camp, Samburu Lodge, or Larsens Camp Samburu. If you are not staying in the national parks and have to drive to the National park daily, it is unlikely that you will experience this. But it is a fantastic experience!
What if I don't want to bargain for something I want to buy?
Ask me or your guide or host to do it for you. But, what I do... I go to a seller with how much I want to spend and offer it to them. If they take it great. If they don't I walk away.
Join me for my April and May 2026 dates. I have the best mix of culture and adventure.
