Is Africa Safe for Female Tourists?
It depends on the context. But generally yes, if you look after yourself. I wrote about safety in Kenya for women here, but the highlights are below.
Are males aggressive and will they attack me in Kenya?
NO. People do not follow you or chase you around on Safari. But to make Africa safe for you, make sure you do not go out alone at night time.
Will the Beach Boys annoy me?
If you are on the beach, you might get annoyed with the beach boys, who don’t like to take no for an answer. But on Safari and around Nairobi, you will be fine. My advice for the Beach Boys is to be firm. Give them recognition that you have seen them and heard them. Often, if they feel ignored, they will pester you more.
My personal advice after several safaris and beach holidays in Africa.
Don’t go out alone at night.
Wear the right shoes! You might be in more trouble if you cannot walk properly when on Safari or a bushwalk from bugs and insects than by men.
Dress how you like, but take a scarf everywhere. I always have a wrap or scarf. If I feel nervous, I put it in my hair, and then I never get bothered. I got through Cairo and Egypt too with little hack! Read my Safari Survival guide!
To answer the question, Is Africa Safe for Female Tourists? Yes. But don't do anything risky. Everyone in the day will be friendly and lovely. At night time, you need to be with somebody at all times.
