Menstrual Health Education on Kenya Safaris: Active Community Support
In May 2026, we hosted our first-ever ethical safari for women in Kenya. We had a pilot last November, which was fantastic, but this time with paying customers it was tremendously important validation for what we are trying to achieve.
What are we trying to achieve?
Well we would like to combine luxury travel that is ethical with community impact initiatives. So you enjoy a brilliant Safari and then do a day of community work.
Did we achieve it? Actionable Impact Travel: Supporting Schoolgirl Health on a Kenya Safari
Yes. By the overwhelming response of pride, joy and happiness from our group. I think we did.
We tested several initiatives but one that stands out is reusable sanitary towel distribution at Nyolo Primary School.
Sanitary Distribution to girls in school - the facts.
Many girls in Kenya simply stop coming to school when they have their periods and can miss out on exams and other achievements at school. Not everyone can afford sanitary towels so distribution of free reusable pads keeps the girls at school.
What’s Inside a CWC School Sanitation Kit & How It Helps
Kit Item | What It Includes | The Real-Life Benefit for the Girls |
The Reusable Pads | A mix of sizes and absorbencies featuring an organic cotton top sheet, an absorbent core, leak-proof backing, and secure snap wings. | Provides soft, reliable protection that stops leaks completely, allowing girls to sit comfortably in class without fear of staining their uniforms. |
Wet / Dry Storage Bag | A discrete, waterproof, and odor-proof travel pouch with separate sections for fresh and used pads. | Allows girls to change their pads privately at school and carry them home safely and hygienically in their schoolbags. |
Cotton Underwear | 1 to 2 pairs of durable, breathable cotton briefs included in the kit. | Ensures the reusable pads snap on perfectly and stay securely in place, even when running or playing sports. |
Laundry & Care Supplies | A small bar of laundry soap, drying pegs, and sometimes a compact washing basin. | Gives girls the exact tools they need to wash, dry, and maintain their pads independently, keeping them fresh for years. |

How did the volunteering go?
Well we started off talking to the girls and introducing ourselves. Then we explained what the period was and asked if anyone had it. A few girls said yes, but as we imagined only about 5 older girls were in the class. It was mainly much younger children.
Then they listened and laughed when they saw the underwear and we gave them a bag to open and we explained everything in it.

What struck me the most?
I can go on and say a lot of meaningful things now. But, I feel that the work we did that day speaks for itself. The girls were honest, endearing and innocent. Many asked simple questions that we knew the answers to in my time as Judy Blume told us.
The question I received was “my vagina hurts when I bleed.”
I explained that it's because the body is changing and maybe a few pelvic floor and hip flexor exercises would change that. It would stretch out your muscles and get you ready for becoming a woman.
Then I stopped and sort of got all empowered and shouted. “I am a woman and I am proud!”
The eyes glared back at me as though they had not heard that before. Then I asked the women in our group - “Are you proud to be women?”
They screamed yes and then the whole class was chanting. “I am a woman and I am proud.”
I nearly cried, but I had my Martin Luther King moment, I always dreamed of.
I loved the girls.
Our next Safari with social impact is on October 11 2026 and find out about our Safari Itineraries for 2026.
