When is the Mosquito Season in Kenya?
Mosquito season in Kenya is most noticeable during and just after the rainy periods. This is from April to June and again in November.
Gut reaction - I am going to ignore those months?
Reality - that is a massive mistake as, mosquitos are far less of an issue on safari than most first-time travellers expect, especially in dry regions like Samburu and the northern conservancies.
I’ve just returned from a safari where mud, rain, and early mornings were far more memorable than mosquitos... and that experience shapes how I design my itineraries. If you’re planning a slow, ethical safari in Kenya and want to understand when mosquitos matter (and when they really don’t), read on!
When is the Mosquito Season in Kenya, Radar for the Green Season, and November
Feature | Northern Dry Samburu | Masai Mara (South Kenya) | The Verdict for British People, like me |
Heat Radar | 27 Degrees (average) | 23 Degrees (average) | Perfect English Summer temperatures! |
Mosquito Level | Low- Medium | Low - Medium | Less than the humid nights in London |
Fly Factor | Minimal | Low as it is cool | Perfect for outside dining |
Humidity | Low | It's fresh and crisp - not humid | No sweaty nights and great for sleep |
Crowd Level | Low | Much lower than usual | You own the horizon |
Why do mosquito levels vary by region?
Water. The location of water and the coast has a lot to do with this. If you are near the coast you will have more mosquitos than in the North. Masai Mara in the South of Kenya will have more than Samburu in the North. But both The Mara and Samburu will not have as many on the coast.
How mosquitos really affect a safari?
I think it's mainly by outfit choice. There are no evening dresses or ball gowns at night time. You should be covered in the evenings. Long sleeves and long trousers. Plus socks, even with sandals! This is a must. This is my perfect evening safari outfit. The white jeans make it chic, the brown top simple and the jacket your very strong protection. It does get cold in the evenings and this is perfect for outdoor, no-bite, dining.

What mosquito repellent do you use?
I use this one from Boots. Its Repel and its a roll-on. I find this better than the spray as you can put it where you need it and its easy accessible and small enough to fit in your crossbody.
All my safari itineraries are carefully planned. Most days are spent in dry, open landscapes where mosquitos are minimal. You can see the whole plan here. Woman Safari in Kenya and sustainable luxury safaris Kenya.
